Another great video. Thank u! I guess you’re purposely inviting a banger to play the kitchen game and hopefully they are uncomfortable but the downside is that you allow them to come up to the kitchen. It’s hard sometimes cuz we’re “taught” to always force the opponent to stay back and don’t allow them up. I also tried blocking the banger’s ball firmly back resulting in a volley trying to keep them back but end up sending it out of the court. I guess I need a change in mindset.

In my opinion people who aren't serving properly should be corrected. If they don't know those basic rules - they probably don't know other rules either and they have an unfair advantage every time they serve. I don't like playing with people like that.

Yes, I think this is a panic shot and the 1st option hitting soft in front or to the middle seems to work for me. If I am moving my lobs are not controlled and tend to go long.

It’s mostly fine, but there’s a lot of things people do wrong. Choosing niche music, too loud, too soft, etc. all make it irritating. The number one problem is the competing loud speakers. There can be only one.

Honest question for James...i noticed you bounce nonstop between actual play. In exercise physiology, this is called NEAT and it adds up in terms of calories burned and I know some tennis players bounce such as djokovic when he's returning serve but I see that as a few split steps joined together. Ive never seen anyone do what you do. It seems like alot of pent up energy. Can you give some insight?

Music. The question isn't "Do you mind people playing music on the courts?" The question is "Would you like to have music blaring that you dislike?" If you're saying you don't mind music playing, odds are that's because you don't mind the stuff that you're typically hearing. Of course, you're open to that. But, let's say I blared (loudly!) some polka or Christian rock or Sardinian throat singing (that's a thing) or folk music. Would you mind then?

Hi James-I’m intrigued with your explanation of flick mechanics: visualize throwing a frisbee. I’ve played frisbee all my life and want to use what I know and experiment with a pickleball flick. I throw both side arm and underhand discs. Which throw would you imitate for a flick? Do you have any pointers on the best paddle angle for when it makes contact with the ball. Thanks a lot!

I have a question! What are your thoughts on spectators making in/out calls? It's against official PB rules, but it happens often in rec play, whether they're asked or not. I personally think spectators should never make the call because aside from it being a rule, a) they could still be wrong b) they could be biased and make an intentionally wrong call and c) if they hypothetically weren't there, a call would still need to be made so the player needs to make the call. But I get pushback ANY time I'm in a game and spectators give their own call and I try to say their call shouldn't be considered. If I'm watching and I get asked, I always say I didn't see, whether that's true or not. I'd say the only time it's ok is if all 4 players on the court agree to ask the spectator Related but different, how do you go about if you feel your opponent is making bad back line calls? Personally, I can never get as good a look as my opponents so I'd never argue it but I see arguing happen a LOT and it annoys me so much, I'm 2 ft from the ball and call it out but my opponent who is 20+ ft from the ball(at a worse angle) argues that I was wrong, wtf. And then if they lose, they whine about the "bad" call being part of the reason

Great to meet you 2 tonight(Friday) at CL! A few comments I have about this vid: -Music is fine as long as you can hear the other players. Sometimes the speaker is facing the court and it's hard to hear anything, that's annoying -You've mentioned in more than 1 video that there were no questions but I'd say either check older vids for a question(I've asked a few in various past vids) or give some kind of prompt or specific topic to ask about. I could ask 100 things but it's helpful to narrow it down -I also think a helpful thing you could add to this is a tip of the week, some kind of thing that many intermediate players struggle with or that you often see them do wrong. Personally, I see some intermediates that lob way too often, almost like it's their 3rd shot drop but they get away with it becsuse many intermediates can't handle lobs well. Any tip would be great, just something that's not super obvious for beginners

I'm glad to see that Steve is providing some focus on how to enable seniors to play more effectively which can be significantly different from the approach a younger more mobile player may use. Additionally, this will allow senior players to play safer and with less risk of getting injured or falling. Thanks again Steve.

I agree, these tips work fine if you're "thin n athletic" and experienced.. New players < 1year are not usually able to follow this process.. Also, having your partner "switch" creates 2 players moving?? This puts an advantage on the return team to target BOTH players vs. only 1.. Nice n short video.

the way we do our music is portable speakers that we move to the court we're playing on bc we play rotation courts then we ask the player on our court if they mind that we play music. Only once did a player mind and didn't play music, however we just made sure that person was not part of our four.

Regardless of the outcome, playing with Ben is a great experience to grow and learn from imo. As far as my takeaway from watching your quarterfinal match, I’d say you have the power game mostly figured out, but to become a great player, you definitely need the feel and touch game (dinks , drops, resets), while remaining poised and patient. IMHO, of course.
